Yes, I'm Pregnant!

I've been so absent from this blog for the past few months and now you know why. Yes, the big exciting news is that I'm having a baby! I'm incredibly excited about it, despite the fact that I've been feeling, ummm, early pregnancy symptoms. I'd like to kick the person who coined the term "morning sickness" and demand that we call it what it is... all-the-freaking-time-round-the-clock-constant-nausea-with-and-without-vomiting-pregnancy-sickness.

If you've followed the blog for the past few years or so, you know that I had been grappling with the decision to have another child or not. It's a tough thing to decide when you have one child with a disability- especially one that has no known cause but seems to be affected by at least some genetic factors. Of course, as my old pal Lynn said, this time I'm swimming in a whole new gene pool.

About six months ago, Ben and I decided that we wanted to have a baby. There were so many factors that went into that decision and it's very personal for every family. We'd made the decision months before we decided to start trying. There was some minimal prep work to be done. I was taking some meds I wanted out of my system and we both wanted to be sure we were in maximum health. We'd read that at my age (35) it could take couples up to a year to conceive. So, we decided to get on it. It did not take a year. Let's just say that all that stuff they told us in high school health class about it only taking one time was pretty accurate!

So, here we are. Pregnant. Little Bird's baby brother or sister will arrive right around her birthday at the end of January. We bought her a big sister book and told her around 10 weeks. I was pretty sure she'd listen and then respond with, "Ok. Can I watch a show?" And, yes, it did go a little something like that. But she loved her book. While playing outside with a neighbor, she said, "I want to go read my big sister book!" And that's how the neighbors found out! A few days ago, she and I talked about the bump in my belly and I told her that my belly's gonna get really big and she responded, "the baby!!" So, she gets it.

She has requested a baby sister and has picked out the name Strawberry Shortcake for it. If it's a boy, she would like to name it Huckleberry Pie. I told her we'd have to talk about it. Or maybe Strawberry Shortcake would make a nice Hebrew name?

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. -SouleMama
